Introduction to Communication

TUE 3-4 The course introduces some fundamental notions and points of view about the creative nature of human communication and the interaction of various semiotic systems (in particular, linguistic and visual signs) in actual texts. Numerous concrete examples (relatively simple texts in English, images, objects etc.) are meant to help students grasp intuitively the concepts and ideas. Foreign students can receive alternative bibliography in languages other than English and Japanese (esp. French, Spanish, Italian and German).
Special Seminar in Communication Studies

TUE 5-6 The general topic of this course is ‘Translation as cross-linguistic and cross-cultural mediation’. Using as a background some semiotic concepts, class activities will focus on translation from English into Japanese and from Japanese into English, and on the relevance of the broader cultural context in each case. A variety of text types will be examined (poetic texts, pop song lyrics etc.).
