Job Information

The faculty of Education and Human Studies supports the career formation of the students. For example, lectures about the career opened in the Seminar in the First Year (compulsory for all students), subjects relating to the career formation and subjects which are necessary for cultivating the practical skills as a teacher are incorporated in the curriculum. Also, other job guidance and lectures are offered by the welfare staff and "Career Committee", which is formed by the professors/teachers. Further, Job Information Center with dedicated staff is open for students. In this way, we offer detailed support for each and every student.

Akita University supports the job research for all the students in all faculties. Here, we will briefly explain the career formation support and job support in the Faculty of Education and Human Studies.

Career Formation Support by the Faculty of Education and Human Studies

[What is Career Formation?]
In a narrower sense, "Career" means "getting a job", "job history", "course", but in a broader sense, it means the life style throughout one's total life.
In the career formation in this University, the purpose of career formation for a student is to cultivate necessary power/ability to search for jobs during the university life, to acquire the necessary power/ability to work and live life, and further to make it possible to live his/her own life after graduation.
The Career Committee of the Faculty of Education and Human Studies offers career formation support for students, especially from the view of job search activities. The main activities for respective grades are as follows:

First Grade: [Formation of the Career View]

For the students in the first grade, Career Committee supports student's formation of the career view, and supports the preparation for the course, giving advice corresponding to each student's desired course such as teacher, civil servant, private company or further study in an academic institution.

[What is the Career View?]

Firstly, what does working mean? It is obvious that working is necessary for earning money for living life, but it is also said that it is difficult for one to keep the motivation to continue working for long decades after graduation. Not only for earning money, but also the importance is the self-realization in any form through working. Then, what is "working" for you? What life will you be living five years later, ten years later, and further years later? That is the career view, which also affects your life view.

When considering "getting a job" for the students studying in this Faculty, the main courses are: teacher, civil servant, and private company. Therefore, the Career Committee of the Faculty of Education and Human Studies has three departments for supporting the students, namely: Teacher's Department, Civil Servant's Department and Private company's Department.

Details of the Support by the Courses Desired by the Students

  • Teacher: In the lecture of "Teaching Profession - for Beginners", students can hear a speech by a professor with a long career in the teaching profession, and there are also chances to visit the actual field of school. In the subject of "Studies on Education Practice", there are chances to visit a children's house or children's class to actually communicate with children.

  • Civil Servant: Guidance on the preparation for the civil service examination and on how to study for becoming a civil servant is given in the "Seminar in the First Year" (compulsory for all the students of first grade) and the "Basic Lecture About Civil Servant" and the job guidance held by the Career Committee. In the Basic Lecture About Civil Servant, students can learn about the work of civil servants, for example, through hearing the speeches by a real civil servant who works in the category of work that student's desire.

  • Private Company: Students can learn about private companies in the lecture "Career Design - Basic". Lecture about career formation can also be heard in "Seminar in the First Year".

Second Grade: [Development of the Sense of Career]

In the second grade, students will have to develop a sense of career more concretely, deciding their courses after graduation. The Career Committee provides support for students to deepen their understanding on "working" and to acquire necessary skills.

Details of the Support by the Courses Desired by the Students

  • Teachers: "Teaching Practice for the Main License - Period I" will start, which will be done in the associated preschool and/or schools. The period of practice is only two weeks, but students will surely feel the worth and difficulties of the teaching profession through actually teaching in a class and closely communicating with children. There is also "Nursing Care Experience" practiced in a special support school or in a welfare facility, and the lecture "Studies on Education Practice II" to experience supporting children in a Youth Outdoor Learning Center.

  • Civil Servant: Support for attending an interview or a group discussion will be provided in the lectures held by the Career Committee. As you know, specialty classes will start from the second grade, but besides such classes, many subjects helpful for becoming a civil servant are opened in this Faculty. Such subjects will help students to understand how the studying experience in a university will serve after becoming a civil servant. By planning the studying curriculum taking into account the career formation, active studying attitude will be naturally acquired.

  • Private Company: Students can learn about private companies in the lecture "Career Design - I", "Career Design II" and "Career Design - General Theory". The Career Committee also recommends participating in the internship using the summer holidays. It is recommended because the gap between the image and the reality of a job will be reduced by actually experiencing the job.

Third Grade: [Clarification of the Career Target and Development of Autonomous Motivation to Get a Job]

From the third grade, activities for getting a job will start. Students have to decide what job he/she wants to get, and have to collect sufficient information on his/her desired course. In this Faculty, support for such activities are provided according to each student's desired course.

Details of the Support by the Courses Desired by the Students

  • Teachers: "Teaching Practice for the Main License - Period II" will start. This practice will be done for three weeks, and the student has to attend in a class, or sometimes in a whole school, as a teacher without an observatory teacher. This is different from the "Teaching Practitioner Main License - Period I" where multiple students attend as teachers. In this practice, students can more closely communicate with children and will be a good chance to deeply study about the teaching materials. From the latter Period of third grade, the Supporting Course for the Teacher Employment Examination: "Stage" will start.

  • Civil Servant: Students who wish to become a civil servant will have to prepare for taking the examination of his/her desired category of the job, including the job of secondary desire, by wrapping up the result of his/her studies of three years. The Career Committee will provide support, mainly in giving advice about the theses and analyses of social problems, which requires specialty knowledge and logical explanation ability. Aside from the support by Career Committee, it will be useful for students to attend the class in the Department of Regional Studies and Humanities, which is associated with Local organizations. This would be a good opportunity to experience the real job of a civil servant.

  • Private Company: In the former Period, support for preparing for job search is provided in the Job Guidance (free) held by the University. In this Faculty, guidance on the timing of starting job search and how to fill the entry sheet (introduction), etc., will be held by the Career Committee. In the latter Period, joint company information sessions (free), individual company's information session, etc., will be held. Students will have to focus on the company/industry of his/her desire. In this Faculty, the Career Committee will provide students with necessary support which would be useful for acquiring practical know-how in the second guidance. Also there will be chances to hear about the jobs in private companies from the graduates.

Fourth Grade: [Job Search]

In many cases of private companies, company entrance examinations and interviews start from around March of the third grade. Further, the employment examination for civil servants starts from April of the fourth grade and the teacher employment examination starts in July of the fourth grade. It is said that August is the peak of the employment selection of private companies. The Career Committee will support the students for advancing through these activities smoothly.

Details of the Support by the Courses Desired by the Students

  • Teachers: The first part of the teacher employment examination will be held in July, and the second part will be held in August to September. The Supporting Course for the teacher employment examination "Stage" will support students who try to take this examination, and will last until the end of September. Teaching practices include "Teaching Practice for the Sub License", which are held in May-June and October-November. Also there is a class "Studies on Education Practice IV" for acquiring practical skills in the actual field of education, which will be practiced in the schools in Akita city.

  • Civil Servant: Civil service examinations will be held by types of civil services, so the date and content of the examination differs by each type of the civil service. As such, The Career Committee will support the students in accordance with each student's desired civil service (including the second desired civil service).

  • Private Company: It is important and useful for a student to have his/her entry sheet checked (corrected) and commented on by another person before the submission. It is also important to have a simulation before the actual interview. The Job Search Promotion Section of the University and Job Information Center of this Faculty will accept application for such checking and/or simulation.

Job Information Center

The Faculty of Education and Human Studies provides job information for the students. This Faculty also provides consultation for students concerning the job search and study course, etc. Currently there are two staff in the Job Information Center, and students have confidence in this Center. Mainly professors/teachers having the specialty of social science in the Career Committee will give guidance in this lecture. In each lecture, tasks are given in advance, and exercises are done such as studies on the job content, interviews, group discussions and short-essays. In this way, the preparation for the employment examination of civil service is done.
