The International Center for Research and Education on Mineral and Energy Resource (ICREMER) carried out a “Short Stay Program for Learning on Resource Science” for one month from October 17 to November 11, 2012, where two students from each of the three countries – Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Botswana – participated.
The students seemed a little nervous at the beginning when the University President Noboru Yoshimura made remarks of encouragement at the opening ceremony. Later on, however, they actively participated in a tour to visit the facilities such as the Mineral Industry Museum, the Venture Business Laboratory and the Venture Incubation Center, taking notes enthusiastically.
During the first week of the Program, the students received lectures by the ICREMER and cooperative teachers in Akita University to deepen knowledge for their individual research projects and also to acquire basic information about the natural resource status and geology of Akita prefecture and Japan in general.
During the second week, they went on field trips to areas around Kosaka town and Hachimantai city to visit facilities of Eco-Recycle Co., Ltd. (Dowa Group), the Kosaka Smelting and Refinery Co. Ltd., the JOGMEC Metals Technology Center, the Sumikawa Geothermal Power Plant, the Osarizawa Mine, and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation Matuso Mine Pollution Control Project Support Office.
On November 10, students had active discussions with other students and teaching staff members during the session where they presented their individual research projects.
On November 11, the last day of the Program, a closing ceremony was held with the participation of Prof. Katsuhiko Enomoto, Director of the International Exchange Center, where Prof. Toshio Mizuta, Director of ICREMER handed out a certificate of completion to each of the students. Ms. Angarag Batbayar, who participated in the Program from Mongolia University of Science and Technology, representing the students said, “We had a very beneficial training experience and therefore we are thankful to everyone who has been involved in the Program. We hope to take good advantage of this experience at Akita University in our future research activities.”
Although it was a short program of only a month, ICREMER hopes that the students would return to their countries with enhanced motivation for their studies and good memories from Akita, wishing all the best in their future activities.
