A short-term training program organized by the International Center for Research and Education on Mineral and Energy Resources(ICREMER), ”Short Stay (SS) Program 2013 on Sustainable International Resource Development”, was held for 4 weeks from October 7 to November 1. The program for this school year, which was held for the third time, was participated by 12 trainees from 6 universities: 3 universities from Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Botswana participating since the first year, and additional 3 universities from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.

On the first day, orientation, the opening ceremony and campus tour were held. During the opening ceremony held at ICREMER where was handed over at the end of the last school year, President Noboru Yoshimura made a speech welcoming and encouraging the trainees.
In the first week, the trainees performed presentations on the situation and issues of resource development in their respective countries, and then fulltime ICREMER professors and cooperative professors of Akita University gave lectures in their professional areas, widely covering resource economics, resource development, resource geology, ore dressing, smelting, energy resources and environmental issues.

In the second week, field trip was carried out to resource-related facilities mainly in the northern part of Akita Prefecture, including Hanaoka Recycle Plant of the DOWA Group, Kosaka Smelter and Osarizawa Mine Heritage as well as Matsukawa Geothermal Power Plant and the mine wastewater treatment plant at the former site of Matsuo Mine in Iwate Prefecture. The trainees were earnestly taking pictures and notes during the briefing by the person in charge of each facility. There had been worried that typhoon might affect the schedule, but a clear sky enabled to enjoy the early autumn leaves and hot springs at the lodging.

After the field trip, the trainees were divided into professional areas and worked on their respective research subjects while receiving guidance from the professors for around 10 days. The presentations on individual research held on October 31 were so intensive that they took more time than scheduled.

On November 1, the last day, the Director of ICREMER Prof.Tsuyoshi Adachi handed the diploma to each trainees during the closing ceremony. Representing the trainees, Carlo-san from University of the Philippines and Lafuma-san from Bandung Institute of Technology made the words of thanks in 6 languages. The program was concluded after taking commemorative pictures of everyone together.

The participants felt that four weeks passed long and fast at the same time. The trainees went back to home after acquiring new knowledge and experience such as analysis using equipments not available in their countries. They made new friends as well. Some said that they would like to come back and study in Akita, Japan. It will be great if such dream will come true.

The International Center for Research and Education on Mineral and Energy Resources, Akita University (ICREMER) held its 8th International Symposium, ”Recent Advances in Resource Science and Technology to Sustain Japan” at Gakushi Kaikan (Kanda, Tokyo) on March 4.

Researchers invited from Canada, Germany, South Africa and Australia, researchers in the Japanese private sector and ICREMER professors gave lectures concerning the latest results in their respective areas.

It was participated by approximately 100 attendees from companies and universities in the resource sector. It was the third time that the symposium was held in Tokyo, in which some of the participants have been participating every year. It was apparent that they were highly interested in resource engineering.

The venue was moved to the Tegata Campus of Akita University on March 6, attracting approximately 50 academic staffs, students and others from the university as well as from the outside.
