University Fees/Living Expenses/Scholarships

In order for students to lead stable and fulfilling university lives, Akita University has put in place a financial support system including tuition fee waivers and scholarships, as well as insurance policies to guard against accidents and other unforeseen events.

* In the event that the tuition fee is revised at the time of enrolment or at any stage while enrolled at this university, the new tuition fee will apply from the time of revision.

Living Expenses

The following is an example of the monthly expenses of two typical students: Student A (living in a dormitory) from Faculty K and Student B (living in an apartment) also from Faculty K.

Exemption from University Fees

Admission Fee Waivers and Deferment

The university has put in place a system of admission fee waivers (full or half of the amount) or deferment. This system is available on request and subject to review to students who are deemed to have an outstanding academic record and who are having trouble paying the admission fee due to financial reasons, or in cases where the person covering the student’s university expenses passes away or is affected by a natural disaster of some kind, such as storm and flood damage, during the year prior to admission at the university.

The university has put in place a system of tuition fee waivers (full, half or 1/3 of the amount) or deferment. This system is available on request and subject to review to students who are deemed to have an outstanding academic record and who are having trouble paying the tuition fee due to financial reasons, or in cases where the person covering the student’s university expenses passes away or is affected by a natural disaster of some kind, such as storm and flood damage.

Scholarships

Japan Student Services Organization

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) has put in place a system of scholarship loans for students with both an outstanding academic record and character who are having trouble meeting the cost of their studies due to financial reasons. The university screens and recommends students at the request of the individual concerned, based on which JASSO selects recipients for this award. Recipients from among new students are selected and scholarships are paid out at the beginning of July.

Types of scholarship

  • Type 1 scholarship (interest-free)
    Monthly loan/Students living at home: ¥30,000 or ¥45,000,
    Students living away from home: ¥30,000 or ¥51,000
  • Type 2 scholarship (with interest)
    Monthly loan/Choice of ¥30,000, ¥50,000, ¥80,000, ¥100,000 or ¥120,000

Other Scholarships

Other scholarships are available from local public organizations and private endowment groups.

Lump-sum Payments for Students affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Akita University provides support to students affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami through donations from external parties.

Other Scholarships

The university plans to put in place the following kinds of monetary awards for students (repayment unnecessary).

  • ¥100,000 as a payment for new undergraduate students enrolling at the university
  • ¥100,000 (maximum) as a payment to support undergraduate and graduate students in their daily lives
  • ¥50,000 (maximum, one-off payment) as a payment to support students in their job hunting activities

Academic Subsidies

As part of its projects to fund education and research, Akita University provides awards in the form of academic subsidies to students who have made outstanding academic achievements.

  • Eligibility/Undergraduates excluding those in the final year of their programs
  • Number of awards available/Faculty of Education and Human Studies: 5; Faculty of Medicine: 4; Faculty of Engineering and Resource Science: 7
  • Amount awarded/¥100,000 per person (estimated)
  • Criteria for determining recipients/Recipients are determined at the Student Support Center based on the recommendation of faculty heads, taking into consideration the academic achievements and personal qualities of students.

Scholarship Fund

Akita University provides scholarship funds to students having difficulty covering the costs associated with their university studies (tuition fees, teaching material fees etc.) as well as the cost of living.

  • Amount of fund: A maximum of ¥300,000 per person, to be repaid at no interest.
  • Selection/Applications from students are screened by the Vice President and decided through an interview.
  • Repayment: Awards are to be repaid within 3 years of graduation (completion).

Student Awards

Akita University has a system of awards for students and student groups. * Supplementary prizes: Award for Excellence ¥50,000; Award for Encouragement ¥20,000
