November 30, 2023 – International Joint Workshop hosted by CINEST, Kyushu University and the Research Institute of Global Resources, Akita University.
Five guests from the Southern African Universities of Smart Mining Special Program (two from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), one each from the University of Botswana, The Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST), and the University of Zambia) visited Japan to present their research related to resources. Committee members from Kyushu University and JICA staff attended a lunch meeting. Professor Adachi (Akita University), reported annual activities of SMP, and discussed planning for the following year.
In addition, two days of fieldtrips were conducted on November 28 to 29 to visit resources and mining facilities in northern Kyushu. On the first day, Mitsubishi UBE Cement Higashitani Mine and Mitsubishi UBE Karita Cement Factory (Fukuoka Prefecture) were visited. On the second day, Omuta Miike Coal Mine (Kumamoto Prefecture), Mudslide-damaged House Preservation Park and Oono Kiba Erosion Control Miraikan (Nagasaki Prefecture) were visited.
