Outline of Exchange Program

Eligibility Students enrolled in an overseas partner university with which Akita University has a memorandum of understanding for student exchange
*The list of overseas partner universities will be posted on the Study Abroad Program Information page.
Program Type The following three programs are offered. For details of each program and conditions of participation, please refer to the Program Details.
Akita University Academic Japanese Program(AUAJ)
Akita University Program for Solving of the Regional Problem(AUSR)
Akita University General Program(AUGP)
Program Duration 1 semester (5 months) or 2 semesters (11 months)
*Participants can choose either, but AUAJ program participants are required to attend for two semesters.
Start of Program April (First semester) or October (Second semester)
Start of application For participation from April (First semester): Around September to October (about 6 months before the program starts)
For participation from October (Second semester): Around March to April (about 6 months before the program starts)
Application Process Please submit the application documents to the International Affairs Division of Akita University through the International Center of your home university.
Details of the application documents and submission deadlines are listed in the application guide. The application guide will be posted on the Study Abroad Program Information page when the application period begins, and will also be sent by e-mail to the person in charge at each partner institution.

Requirements to receive
a Certificate of Completion
If you take 8 class periods or more per week (one class period = 90 minutes) of classes from the international exchange program and/or faculty courses and you properly obtain credits for at least 8 class periods' worth of these classes, then you will be provided with a Certificate of Completion.

Akita University offers three types of exchange programs. Please take a look at the features of each program and use them as a reference to select the program that best suits your purpose of study abroad.

Akita University
Academic Japanese Program (AUAJ)

Special exchange program for learning academic Japanese at Akita University

Description The aim is to develop human resources with the high level of Japanese language skills, specialized knowledge and the motivation needed to study at university.
Application requirements Applicants must be enrolled at an Akita University international exchange partner university and majoring in Japanese language or Japanese language education.
Language requirements Students with JLPT N2 or higher Japanese language proficiency
Period of study 2 semesters
Language in the class Japanese
Scholarship None

Akita University Program
for Solving of the Regional Problem (AUSR)

Problem-solving program for the local community

Description Participate in local events and exchange activities with local residents while studying Japanese language and specialties
Compulsory classes: Introduction to Japanese Culture, Introduction to Japanese Society,Introduction to participatory workshop
Application requirements Applicants must be enrolled at an Akita University international exchange partner university.
Language requirements English or Japanese language skills sufficient to study at Akita University
Period of study 1 semester or 2 semesters
Language in the class Mainly English
Scholarship JASSO scholarship: 80,000 JPY/month
※Eligible countries: Canada, Israel, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Romania, Germany, Philippines and Mongolia
※There is a screening process for this scholarship.
※If you cannot enter Japan, you cannot receive the scholarship.

Akita University General Program (AUGP)

Description Able to freely take classes in the program for international students and specialized courses in your department.
Application requirements Applicants must be enrolled at an Akita University international exchange partner university.
Language requirements English or Japanese language skills sufficient to study at Akita University
Period of study 1 semester or 2 semesters
Language in the class English or Japanese
Scholarship None

Schedule to start the program

The following is the approximate schedule from application to the start of the program. Please note that your home university may have its own internal deadlines, so we recommend that you consult with the International Center of your home university as soon as possible if you wish to participate in the program.

Taking the Online Japanese Test

Application for Japan Visa
