Akita Fuki, a Model of School Seal is in a Best Time to View

 

 

 

Akita Fuki, a Japanese butterbur in Tegata Campus of Akita University is in a best time to view. Akita Fuki grows up to length of stalk 1.5m, thickness 5cm and width of a leaf 1.3m. Cutting of Akita Fuki in June is a seasonal tradition of Niida area in Akita City. Japanese butterbur has a behavior of growing high and make leaf bigger to demand sunlight. Despite of a shady area, you will be able to see it growing large around Faculty of Engineering Science Building 7.
The leaf of Akita Fuki is the model of our school seal at Akita University. It is a design won the first prize at the contest to commemorate opening of the University in September 16th, 1949, University logo on the 3 butterbur leaves designed by Jyo Nakamura, an instructor of Mining Department. It has been used for a logo and set as a school seal on April 1st, 2002. At the same time official style of school pennant was also set.
